Install Error 1406 (Cannot write the value to the registry key. )
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\ does not exist and writing the registry key is blocked by antivirus protection.
Answer
Disable your antivirus protection and try to install Rhino 5 again.
The settings in some antivirus applications are pretty complicated. If you don’t know how to disable your antivirus protection completely, you can remove the antivirus application before installing Rhino 5. Reinstall the antivirus application after Rhino 5 has been installed successfully.
Note: This problem only happens on a Windows that has never had Rhino 5 installed. Those registry keys don’t exist and the antivirus application blocks Rhino 5 installer from writing the registry keys.
If a Windows had Rhino 5 installed previously, even though it has been uninstalled, those registry keys still exist. Rhino 5 or the SR installer won’t try to write those registry keys again and antivirus protection won’t cause the problem.
Windows Installer Error 1406
When a setup is launched, the following error occurs during the installation process:
Error -1406: Could not write value VersionMajor to key.
Other known instances of this error are:
Error -1406: Could not write value folders to key Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress
Error — 1406: Could not write InstanceIndex to key.
The text of the error message may vary, but the error code indicates that the installer failed to write a registry value. Clicking the OK button causes the setup to rollback.
Cause
This error is displayed by the Microsoft Windows Installer Service. A limited amount of information is known about the specific cause of this error as it rarely occurs and is typically encountered on an intermittent or machine-specific basis. Some known causes for this error are:
- Insufficient privileges for writing to that particular registry key.
- On Windows NT machines, the installation is attempting to create a registry key off of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hive in the Windows registry. Windows NT does not allow this.
- An invalid setup version is specified.
- MSI 1.1 or 1.2 is used, rather than MSI 2.0 or later.
- On Windows 95, 98, and Me machines, a registry key size limit is exceeded.
- A binary registry value has spaces, for example, 01 00 04 80 00 00.
Resolution
The following options have been known to resolve this error message in the majority of cases:
- Make sure the user has full administrative privileges for that machine.
- If this occurs on a Windows NT machine, make sure the registry key is being created off of an existing key under that particular registry hive as Windows NT does not support creating a key directly beneath the registry hive. For example:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
Rather than:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
But the following is not:
- Registry values are limited to 16,382 on Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition and 16,371 on Windows 95. This effectively limits the number of components per feature to 817. The limit varies, depending on any additional space needed to accommodate optional parent features, which should be placed in the same value.
- The total size of a registry key and all its values is limited to 64 KB on Windows 95. This can limit the maximum total number of features and components in a product.
- Windows Installer version 1.2 saves in-progress information as a registry value. This can limit the maximum number of features on Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition. This limitation no longer exists with Windows Installer version 2.0 or later.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress
- Select the Direct Editor view.
- Locate and select the Directory table.
- Change all entries that are uppercase to lowercase.
- Save and rebuild the project.
For Developer and above users, InstallShield has created a tool called ResolveDir, that modifies your project automatically and converts all uppercase Directory table entries to lowercase.
Additional Information
This error code is briefly documented in the Windows Installer Help Library topic Windows Installer Error Messages.
Error 1402 or error 1406 when installing Acrobat or Reader
When you install Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader 7 or later on Windows, one of the following errors appears, and the installation quits:
- Error 1402: Could not open key [key name].
- Error 1406: Could not write value Folders to key [key name].
TRY THIS FIRST
Remove all previous versions of Acrobat or Reader, and then reinstall
Adobe does not support multiple versions of Acrobat or Reader on the same machine. Because Acrobat and Reader work with many products, multiple versions simultaneously installed can lead to software conflicts and errors. In addition, Adobe does not recommend installing both Acrobat and Reader on the same machine. You must have administrator privileges to complete these steps. For more information on administrator privileges, see the Windows documentation or contact Microsoft.
Do one of the following, depending on your version of Windows:
- (Windows 7) Click Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs And Features.
- (Windows Vista) Click Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs And Features.
- (Windows XP) Choose Start > Control Panel, and double-click Add Or Remove Programs.
Select Acrobat or Reader, and then click the option to remove or uninstall the program.
Repeat the procedure for all installed versions of the program.
Restart your computer and reinstall Acrobat or Reader.
Note: For Acrobat, reinstall the program from the Acrobat disk, or download the program from adobe.com. For Reader, download the program from the Reader Download Center. If installing on Vista, right-click the Acrobat or Reader installer and select Run As Administrator.
The following demonstration shows how to uninstall Acrobat or Reader on Windows XP.
More solutions
1. (Advanced) Set permissions to their defaults in the registry
- Vista and Windows 7
- Windows XP
- Windows 2000.
Disclaimer: The registry contains system-related information that is critical to your computer and applications. Before modifying the registry, be sure to make a backup copy of it. Adobe doesn’t provide support for problems that can arise from improperly modifying the registry. Adobe strongly recommends that you have experience editing system files before you modify the registry. For information on the Windows Registry Editor, see the documentation for Windows or contact Microsoft Technical Support.
Perform these steps during Acrobat or Adobe Reader installation. The Administrators group is the default local administrative group for Windows.
Windows Vista and Windows 7
Write down the path to the key in the error message and leave the installation running. For example: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.pdf\PersistentHandler.
